Wine rewarded or not?
There are many contests to promote, select and reward the best wines of a category thanks to a medal. In France, there are nearly 20 major contests and around 40 in the world. It’s the same as a medal of wine as for all the other medals, all the rewards do not have the same value. A medal won at the Olympic Games does not have the same echo as the medal won at a regional competition!
An award wine, what is it?
It is a wine that the winegrower has presented in a contest and he pays to participate! Winemaker will never win a medal if he has not look for win one. In other words, a wine-grower who is already sure to sell all his production has no interest to participate in a contest.
In a contest, we will only find wine estates that they want to make themselves known or cuvées that have not yet been evaluated.
Concerning the competitions, there is everything from local micro-contest to international and between the well-known like that of Paris or independent winegrowers and that other contest totally unknown, the choice is quickly made!
What about the jury?
The bottles are always presented before a jury but who composes it? It depends, for example, on the Brussels World Wine Competition, the jury is made up of 300 professional tasters from all over the world, and it is roughly the same for all the best known contests. Conversely, the General Agricultural Competition, for example, is composed of amateur and the result is not quite the same …
It should be known that a quarter to a third of the wines that are presented will be medal. Yes, there is not one winner per category!
Finally, a medal wine is a wine that has presented the day of the contest a sufficiently expressive, balanced and harmonious character so that it can please at the greatest number of person and that it is without defect! This wine was good on D-Day with a J jury in a L-location. So that doesn’t mean that on the day you go drink it, you’ll want to award it a medal.
So do we trust it or not?
Of course, the medal remains an important criterion of choice we can trust it for the the best known but on the contrary it is not because the wine is not medal that means it is bad.
The medal will help the regular consumer who doesn’t have big wine knowledges and who doesn’t know what to choose, it ensures that the wine has no defect but it does not ensure that it will be great!
For the consumer, the medal gives the capacity to evaluate the quality of the wine without having tasted it and for the winemaker the medal allows to reach a new audience.
