We invite you to discover the history of our family property and to understand the complex characteristics of the terroir of Barsac and Sauternes, an appellation near Bordeaux, that produces the most famous sweet wines in the world. After a private tour of the estate, a vertical tasting of 3 legendary Château Caillou vintages will allow you to capture the beauty of the evolution of Sauternes wines over time.

Wine and cheese pairing
We invite you to discover the history of our family property and to understand the complex characteristics of the terroir of Barsac and Sauternes, an appellation near Bordeaux, that produces the most famous sweet wines in the world. After the visit of the estate, enjoy a wine and cheese pairing ! The tasting includes 4 wines of the Château Caillou, dry wine and sweet wine, with 4 types of cheese.
Reservations required 48 hours in advance. In the event of cancellation by the customer, the payment is refundable up until 48 hours before the reservation.

Picnic among the vines
Discover the vineyards of the Sauternes region for a unique gourmet moment. We welcome you in the estate for a visit of our vineyard and cellar, followed by a wine tasting. To extend your visit, we have selected the perfect place to enjoy a picnic with a beautiful view or our chateau and our oldest plot, in the shade of our large magnolia. The picnic basket, prepared by our team, is made up of local and seasonal products, with a bottle of dry white wine and grape juice for the little ones.

Our history
Château Caillou is classified as a « Second Grand Cru Classé » of the famous 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac. But first and foremost, Château Caillou is a family estate since 1909 !
In 1909, Joseph Ballan buys the Château at auction. His only daughter, Reine Ballan, continues her father’s work with great passion and devotion, with her husband Joseph Bravo by her side. Their daughter, Marie José, already quite involved in Château Caillou, becomes the owner in 1997, as well helped by her husband. Today, we, Sébastien and Jean-Noël Pierre, are proud to represent the fourth generation of vintners and owners of the family.
Château Caillou is situated on the high plateau of Barsac, where is gathered the most ancient and renowned estates of the appellation. Our terroir is quite rich : clay-limestone subsoil, covered by a bed of red sand and dotted with small rocks called « graves » on the surface. We produce wines that are reflecting the terroir of Barsac : great freshness and minerality, delicate aromas, and most importantly less opulent and heavy compared to the typical Sauternes wine.
Among the 17 hectares (44,5 acres) we tend, 13 hectares (32 acres) are surrounding the Château, protected by old stone walls. We produce our Sauternes and sparkling wine only with Semillon, and we keep the freshness of our Sauvignon Blanc for our dry white wine. Our vineyard is conducted in sustainable agriculture, and we obtained in 2021 the High Environmental Value Level 3 label.
Whether you are a wine lover or a beginner, we will welcome you at the estate with great conviviality and authenticity. All our visits are private to ensure a true moment of sharing and complicity.

Magnifique découverte. Nous avons visité le domaine du château caillou et ce fût de loin notre meilleure visite de domaine viticole dans la région de Bordeaux. L’accueil était parfait et nous avons senti la passion qui anime les personnes en ce lieu. On sent tout de suite que c’est un domaine familial. Nous recommandons vivement la découverte de cet endroit. Le vin est très bon et les tarifs tout à fait correct vu le travail que demande la production de ce type de vin.

Fantastic family-friendly tour and tasting with Sebastien! Chateau Caillou was incredibly thoughtful in including little ones with a special activity book, their own grape juice \"tasting\", and an interactive smell guessing game. Ce fut un très agréable moment que nous avons passé au domaine Caillou. Accueillis et guidés par M. Sébastien PIERRE, ce dernier est très clairement passionné par son métier et donc passionnant. Nous avons appris avec plaisir beaucoup de choses sur le vin et plus particulièrement le Sauterne (logique dans la région !). Si vous devez passer dans la région, n\'hésitez pas à vérifier les disponibilités de visite, ça vaut le détour !
