It’s decided during the spring holidays we’re going to discover the vineyard of Burgundy !
Here I am sit in front of my computer to try to plan our visit. Keyword «vineyard Burgundy», I click on the website www.bourgogne-wines.com. Awesome! A tab meets my request: a trip through the vines.
I decide to select the tour named « Sur la route touristique des grands crus » then download the roadmap « Route touristique des grands crus » and here we go !
The plan of the road is clear but the vineyards: who are they …?
Names are associated to cities, but I don’t know them… Never mind, I only have to verify directly on their web site. If I trust the plan, we begin by the visit of Mulot and Petitjean. Research begins, I expect to come across beautiful pictures of wineries, vines… but not at all I came accross some gingerbread images! Mulot and Petitjean is certainly a famous and respectable gingerbread factory since 1796, but I doubt they propose me to taste Burgundy wine.
Second stage of our road wines: Pressoirs des Ducs. Again I’m trying to contact this domain to book a tasting visity. Unlucky! I come across the website of Chenôve town which owns one of the wonders of architecture and wine technology of the Middle Ages: the Presses of the Dukes of Burgundy, built in 1238. The wine get certainly better with the age but 8 centuries later I’m not sure of the result.
Gourmand tour then a cultural one: did the third step will be finally oenological?
Château de Marsannay… This name reminds me something … Yes, I have the confirmation of it on the Internet which answers me “Château de Marsannay – The rising appellation “. On their website, I fill out the registration form and cross my fingers that they’ll call me back quickly …
Back on my map I realize that our trip goes through Gevrey-Chambertin a town but also a famous appellation from the wines of Burgundy. Nevertheless without specify a particular domain to visit and yet a stop is necessary in this high place of Burgundy which, within its 550 hectares of pinot noir, has 9 “grands crus” and 27 “premier crus”. Then I look at the city’s website, trying to find an area likely to receive us. However, the vineyards are not listed here. So back to www.bourgogne-wines.com which gives me the list of the wine growers producing the appellation Gevrey-Chambertin.
This list is counted no less than 138 winegrowers sell this appellation. I focused on those located in Gevrey-Chambertin and reduced the list to 25. Still remains to find THE winemaker prompt to receive us. To do that it’s better to contact them directly.
Once my reservation was taken I go back to our wines trail map. The other two essentials steps of our road wine trip are undoubtedly Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits Saint-Georges. Next to the first is indicated Château du Clos Vougeot which is unfortunately not a vineyard but a real castle from the twelfth century. The only time to taste wine in this place is in June when the music and wine festival takes place. If my memories are good, Chambolle-Musigny is not only the name of a city but also an appellation. Back to my keyboard where I type “Chambolle-Musigny” and where I get back to www.bourgogne-wines.com on which 5 winegrowers are listed.
It’s up to me to make my choice according to their availability.
Isn’t possible to simplify the way to boo
k a trip ?
Finally my trip in Burgundy wouldn’t be successful if I didn’t stop in the capital of premium wines of Burgundy well known under the name of Nuits-Saint-Georges. On our famous map 3 names are associated to this town : Cassinium, Imaginarium and Dufouleur Père & Fils.
Cassinium, offers us tastings of… blackcurrant cream.Imaginarium is a wine tourism site introducing us to the world of vine and wine.
Finally with Dufouleur Père & Fils, we fully enter the vineyards with this family of owner, grower merchant and wine maturer from father to son for more than 400 years in Nuits-Saint-Georges. I just have to organize the visit, which according to the website will be like that: the wine adviser will welcome us for a visit of his 17th century breeding cellar to explain the specificities of Burgundy’s wines through a tasting. But how can I do that in order to have a quick answer ? There isn’t a registration form online. I find their e-mail address on the website and so Email them to book the ideal date for our tasting. If I don’t have an answer by tomorrow I shall contact them by phone… But what a nice surprise, they reply me on the same afternoon. They are very reactive and restores me faith in my quest !
To finish, I have to admit that the organization of a road-trip in vineyards isn’t a child’s play. There is certainly an easier way to plan a wine tour. Isn’t it Wine Tour Booking ?
