Cahors and its millenary vineyard
Wine of Cahors, in the Midi-Pyrenees region, is an AOC located in the south-west of France. It can be characterized by a soft climate, a soil where the conditions are favorable for the vineyard. This appellation is located in the Lot valley, surrounded by the cities of Cahors, Figeac, Rocamadour or Martel. This is an attractive region. Indeed, visitors have various monuments from the middle age, they are classified at the UNESCO world heritage status. For a stroll along the Lot River, visitors can discover splendid landscapes of the region and regarding the gastronomy, they can taste local specialties like the Aligot! Without forget its millenari vineyard, which has been developed thanks to the work of vintners, wine tourism is now a sustainable activity for the region.

Around its wine sector resources, the Lot is well-known for its calcareous caverns, Padirac abyss, Lacave cavern, but also for its prehistoric testimonies of the end of Paleolithic in Pech Merle, but also Fieux in Miers, or Foissac next to Figeac.

Even if, the comparison with Bordeaux wines was terrible for years, since three decades, wine makers tried to change the image of Cahors, and thanks to their know-how they make the region evolving, and the credit and the brand is better than never. Thanks to philanthropists, such as Alain Dominique Perrin who buy Château Lagrézette, the region had the impulsion to create new things and to enlighten the vineyards.
The new generation of winemakers tries to give freshness and roundness to the vineyard, to restore the status of the famous black wine which owes its name for its purple color, very opaque. The main grape variety of Cahors is the Malbec, this grape variety is so characteristic of the identity of the terroir that we can be confused on the identity of the grape variety and the terroir. Cahors wines succeeded in seducing le world, with 25% of exports in the USA, Canada and China.
Black fruits aromas, spicy notes are the main characteristics of Malbec, these can seduce every connoisseur. These wines aren’t so famous than Bordeaux wines, but they are as good as them. We can name Clos Trigenida of Baldès family, Chateau Haute Serres or Mercues of Vigouroux family, Chateau Gautoul or the vineyards of Parnac.

Black wines have revitalized the region, and a lot of events are organized around the product. Each first Thursday of the month, the villa Cahors-Malbec in Saint-Cirq Lapopie which included tourism office, organize a tasting and a concert for the pleasure of wine lovers! This project and also others have been created by the wine interprofessional union of Cahors which is at the origin of originals events for the discovering of the well-known black wine. Other project like “Malbec in black” offers a tasting in glasses made of black chocolate to combine gluttony and wine!
